Kakamega Forest
This is one of the few remaining natural rainforests located in the western part of the country. The place has over 350 bird species inhabiting the place. The bird species found here include the rare- snake eating birds, Chapin's flycatcher and Turner's Eremomela. 400 of the 1000 butterfly species are found here too. The place has 125 tree species-offering habitat to these birds. The forest is easily accessed for the road network is in good condition, though the most preferred vehicle transport is 4WD vehicles.
Arabuko- Sokoke
This is the largest coastal forest in East Africa found in the country. It measures an area of about 400 square Kilometers. It has over 800 butterfly species inhabiting the place. Over 200 bird species have been recorded here they include Amani Sunbird, Snake Eagle, Fisher's Turaco, Sokoke Scops Owl among many others. Inside the forest lies the ruins of Gedi, an ancient town that thrived in the thirteenth century. Accommodation can be found in a basic campsite in the region, there are other numerous hotels, restaurants and lodges around Arabuko Sokoke and Watamu that offer accommodation facilities.
Lake Nakuru
Dubbed ornithologist's paradise, this 40 Km² Lake is inhabited by a variety of bird species that include Pelicans and over 1.5 million pink-colored flamingoes that feed on algae. There are also numerous water birds in the area. Apart from bird species there are numerous other wildlife species inhabiting the place. Accommodation is easily available in the region in lodges, campsites, hotels among others.
Hells Gate National Park
The park's terrain and landscape provides nesting place for birds in the area. There are more than 100 bird species in the area. The bird species found here include Vultures, augur buzzards, eagles, laughing dove and hooded vultures among many other species. The surrounding area has numerous bird species inhabiting it. During a birding tour one gets to see plenty of mammals in the region too. Accommodation is available in campsites.
Lamu Island
Apart from offering excellent water sporting due to its strategic location in the Kenyan coast, the Lamu Island offers to a good bird viewing spot. Over 90 bird species have been recorded here. The avifauna found here include, Madagascar's Bee-eater, Plovers and Blue-Naped Mouse bird among many other species. The African Fish Eagle known for its distinct sound is found in this location. Accommodation is available in hotels and lodges.
Lake Bogoria
This soda lake is found in the beautiful sceneries of the Great Rift Valley. This 32 Sq Km Lake is still active. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in the region. Among the bird species found here include flamingoes, Black-necked grebe and the fish eagle. |
