Lake Magadi
This salty lake is the main source of table salts for the country. Birds like Chestnut-banded plover and stint are found here. There are more than 18,000 water and migrant birds in the area. The great treks from the Loita hills and Nguruman escarpment mostly end here. The Olorgasalie pre historic site is also found around in this region

Lake Naivasha
This is a fresh water lake that is found in the Great Rift Valley. The lake's name is derived from a maasai word ' Nai'posha' meaning 'rough waters' the colonialists spelt it Naivasha , it's present name. It is mostly bordered by papyrus vegetation (an ancient Egypt's writing material). The vegetation here is mainly composed of grassland and shrub land. The area around the lake has plenty of yellow barked Acacia trees that provide habitat for teeming bird life and foliage to the Giraffes. Colobus Monkey, hippos and Buffalo are among the game found here. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in the area. While in Naivasha one can undertake expeditions activities.

Lake Elementaita
This lake has some history surrounding it; it was one of Lord Delameres zones during the colonial period in Kenya. The games found around it include Eland Zebras, Warthogs and Gazelles. The lake is the breeding zone of the crested Grebe and the white pelican. The lake has flamingoes. Other birds present in the region are Jackson's window bird. It is ideal for walks in the forests nearby. Tourists find accommodation in the lodges and camps available here.

Lake Nakuru/ Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru is 40 km²; it is inhabited by a variety of bird species including over 1.5 milLion pink-colored flamingoes that feed on algae and pelicans. Menengai crater borders the lake in the north, Lion hills in the east, Mau Escarpment in the West and Eburu crater in the south. The best spot to view the lake from is the baboon cliff (named after its main occupiers baboons).
The national park is 168 KM 2. The animal species found here include Rhinoceros, Rotschild giraffes, Lion, Leopard, bat-eared fox, Jackal, Avocets Mongoose, Zorilla, spotted Hyena, hippos, and warthogs among many others. Over 550 plant species have been recorded in this locale. A Rhino conversation project is found here.

Lake Bogoria
This is one of the unique lakes in the world; you can boil an egg in its water. The main source of water for the lake is from the numerous hot springs and geysers that erupt from the earth's surface. The lake is flocked by pink flamingoes. It is believed that the pink color is due to the algae that they feed on. Birds like the fish eagle and steppe eagles are found in the area. The region around the lake is also home to the kudu, Gazelle, baboons and Zebras. Near this 32 sq km lake is Siracho range with its astounding embankment.

Lake Victoria
This is the largest fresh water lake in Africa that covers an area of 68,800km². It is the second largest fresh water lake in the world. The lake has several islands on it. Rusinga Island, found on the northeastern side of the lake, is an island that you get to mingle with history. This is where the archeologist Dr. Mary Leakey discovered the anthropoid ape, Proconsul Africanus that captured headlines all over the world in 1948. There are scattered fossils all over. The island has a resort and lodge. Birds Island is also found here, this is the procreating place for most water birds. While at Lake Victoria, you can do Nile perch fishing, boating, water sports

Lake Turkana
This is the largest desert lake in the world measuring a 6,405 sq km, dubbed 'Jade' Sea. The lake is home to the smallest tribes in the country called the El Molo, that still use hunting and gathering manner of collecting food. The lake has a large population of crocodiles. This 250 kilometers lake is commonly explored using boats that are obtained from the vicinity. |
